New Ulm, Minnesota

On May 30, my friend Mark and I rented a cabin at Flandrau State Park on the outskirts of New Ulm.  It was great catching up with Mark and talking about old times.  This is the only picture I took while camping - the view of the sky from a bench at an overlook.

The next morning we toured the Schell's Brewing company, which was established in 1860 in New Ulm.

Our last stop in New Ulm was Hermann Heights Monument.  From the monument there are great views of New Ulm and the Minnesota River Valley.

The statue depicts Hermann the Cheruscan, also known by the Latin name Arminius, but locals refer to the statue as Hermann the German. This statue commemorates the Germanic victory over the Romans at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, a symbol of German patriotism.
