Late in the day we drove a few miles south to Kaimu. We hiked out onto the lava flow to get a view of the southeast flank of the Kilauea volcano. In the distance we could see steam rising from the volcano. In 1990 a lava flow from Kilauea buried the small town of Kaimu, Kaimu Bay, and a beautiful black sand beach under 50 feet of lava.
New life in the lava.
Amazing lava landscape.
